Join the Cleveland Foundation and the Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards as we host Lan Samantha Chang to discuss “The Family Chao,” a 2023 winner for fiction.
It took Lan Samantha Chang, the director of the Iowa Writers Workshop, a dozen years to compose “The Family Chao.” It transplants the plot of “The Brothers Karamazov” into fictional Haven, Wisc., and a story about the family that runs the town’s Chinese restaurant.
Joyce Carol Oates called the novel “an outstanding work of fiction,” saying she had read nothing else of late as ambitious or accomplished. Rita Dove enjoyed the book’s multi-faceted nature. The event will include food samples from Li Wah’s kitchen.
This event is free and open to the public. A book signing will follow. Light refreshments to be served.
